The Asomaton monastery is located in the Asomatianos plain, in the Amari province, 35km away from Rethymno city, at an altitude of 340m. According to a document from the 13th century, the monastery was founded during the second Byzantine period of Crete (10th-13th century). Legends survive about its foundation. The monastery is fortified.
In the 17th century, the monastery was prosper and became a cultural center of Greek studies. During the Ottoman occupation the monastery suffered destruction and plunder because it resisted the violent islamization.
